Word Power is designed to enable students to increase and understand vocabulary, develop strategies for taking the SAT, improve SAT scores, and focus on meaning clarification and drawing conclusions about word connotations that will promote effective written and oral communication. The course also concentrates on semantics and organizational and critical thinking skills. Learning techniques may include, but are not limited to, individual student analysis of words and cooperative learning. Students will write stories and essays and will create a variety of vocabulary-oriented projects meant to boost word acquisition and deepen word comprehension. In order to increase their exposure to academic vocabulary, students will read sophisticated fictional and nonfictional texts. Speaking, listening, writing, research, and technology skills will be enhanced within the context of course outcomes. |

Sometimes there is little difference between the heroes and the humble. The same personal qualities that serve the hero also help the humble meet life’s everyday challenges. This lesson contains words you can use to discuss the heroic and the humble.
